  “AndIdhrinktoyourhealth,mydear。”sobbedMrs。Speedy,especiallyaffectedbymygallantryinthematterofthethirdshare;“andI’msurewealldhrinktohishealth——Mr。Doddofthepicnics,nogentlemanbetterknownthanhim;andit’smyprayer,dear,thegoodGodmaybelongsparedtoseeyeinhealthandhappiness!”

  IntheendIwasthechiefgainer;forIsoldmythirdwhileitwasworthfivethousanddollars,buttheSpeedysmoreadventurouslyheldonuntilthesyndicatereversedtheprocess,whentheywerehappytoescapewithperhapsaquarterofthatsum。Itwasjustaswell;forthebulkofthemoneywasinPinkerton’sphrasereinvested;andwhennextIsawMrs。
