  Tobesuretheyspokeofconfiningmeinastrait-jacketbut,goodGod!theyneversuspectedmeofhavinglostmybreath。

  Havingatlengthputmyaffairsinorder,Itookmyseatveryearlyonemorninginthemailstagefor,givingittobeunderstood,amongmyacquaintances,thatbusinessofthelastimportancerequiredmyimmediatepersonalattendanceinthatcity。

  As,however,thedaybrokemoredistinctlyinourapproachtotheoutskirtsofthecity,mytormentor,arisingandadjustinghisshirt-collar,thankedmeinaveryfriendlymannerformycivility。

  Iwashere,accordingly,thrownoutatthesignofthe“Crow“bywhichtavernthecoachhappenedtobepassing,withoutmeetingwithanyfartheraccidentthanthebreakingofbothmyarms,underthelefthindwheelofthevehicle。Imustbesidesdothedriverthejusticetostatethathedidnotforgettothrowaftermethelargestofmytrunks,which,unfortunatelyfallingonmyhead,fracturedmyskullinamanneratonceinterestingandextraordinary。

  Thelandlordofthe“Crow。”whoisahospitableman,findingthatmytrunkcontainedsufficienttoindemnifyhimforanylittletroublehemighttakeinmybehalf,sentforthwithforasurgeonofhisacquaintance,anddeliveredmetohiscarewithabillandreceiptfortendollars。

  Notbeingabletoarriveataconclusion,thepractitionersremandedmeforfartherexamination。Iwastakenupintoagarret;andthesurgeon’sladyhavingaccommodatedmewithdrawersandstockings,thesurgeonhimselffastenedmyhands,andtiedupmyjawswithapocket-handkerchiefthenboltedthedoorontheoutsideashehurriedtohisdinner,leavingmealonetosilenceandtomeditation。
