  Andthatwasalltheconversationthatpassedbetweenherandhernearestneighbourforthefirstquarterofanhouraftershecameintocompany。

  But,forallherscreen,shefeltapairofeyeswerefixeduponherwithaglowofadmirationdeepeningtheirhonestbrightness。Somehow,lookinwhatdirectionshewould,shecaughttheglanceofthoseeyesbeforeshecouldseeanythingelse。Sosheplayedwithherapron—strings,andtriednottofeelsoconscious。Therewereanotherpairofeyes,——notsuchbeautiful,sparklingeyes,——deep—set,earnest,sad,nay,evengloomy,watchinghereverymovement;butofthisshewasnotaware。Philiphadnotrecoveredfromtherebuffshehadgivenhimbyrefusinghisofferedhand,andwasstandingstill,inangrysilence,whenMrsCorneythrustayoungwomanjustarriveduponhisattention。
