  Thewallsweredisfiguredbynumeroustabletsofblackandwhitemarbleintermixed,andtheusualornamentationofthatstyleofmemorialaserectedinthelastcentury,ofweepingwillows,urns,anddroopingfigures,withhereandthereashipinfullsail,orananchor,wheretheseafaringideaprevalentthroughtheplacehadlaunchedoutintoalittleoriginality。

  Therewasnowood—work,thechurchhadbeenstrippedofthat,mostprobablywhentheneighbouringmonasteryhadbeendestroyed。Therewerelargesquarepews,linedwithgreenbaize,withthenamesofthefamiliesofthemostflourishingshipownerspaintedwhiteonthedoors;therewerepews,notsolarge,andnotlinedatall,forthefarmersandshopkeepersoftheparish;andnumerousheavyoakenbencheswhich,bytheunitedeffortsofseveralmen,mightbebroughtwithinearshotofthepulpit。ThesewerebeingremovedintothemostconvenientsituationswhenMollyandSylviaenteredthechurch,andaftertwoorthreewhisperedsentencestheytooktheirseatsononeofthese。ThevicarofMonkshavenwasakindly,peaceableoldman,hatingstrifeandtroubledwatersaboveeverything。HewasavehementToryintheory,asbecamehisclothinthosedays。Hehadtwobugbearstofear——theFrenchandtheDissenters。Itwasdifficulttosayofwhichhehadtheworstopinionandthemostintensedread。PerhapshehatedtheDissentersmostbecausetheycamenearerincontactwithhimthantheFrench;besides,theFrenchhadtheexcuseofbeingPapists,whiletheDissentersmighthavebelongedtotheChurchofEnglandiftheyhadnotbeenutterlydepraved。YetinpracticeDrWilsondidnotobjecttodinewithMrFishburn,whowasapersonalfriendandfollowerofWesley,butthen,asthedoctorwouldsay,\'WesleywasanOxfordman,andthatmakeshimagentleman;andhewasanordainedministeroftheChurchofEngland,sothatgracecanneverdepartfromhim。\'ButIdonotknowwhatexcusehewouldhaveallegedforsendingbrothandvegetablestooldRalphThompson,arabidIndependent,whohadbeengiventoabusingtheChurchandthevicar,fromaDissentingpulpit,aslongaseverhecouldmountthestairsHowever,thatinconsistencybetweenDrWilson\'stheoriesandpracticewasnotgenerallyknowninMonkshaven,sowehavenothingtodowithit。DrWilsonhadhadaverydifficultparttoplay,andastillmoredifficultsermontowrite,duringthislastweek。TheDarleywhohadbeenkilledwasthesonofthevicar\'sgardener,andDrWilson\'ssympathiesasamanhadbeenallonthebereavedfather\'sside。Butthenhehadreceived,astheoldestmagistrateintheneighbourhood,aletterfromthecaptainoftheAurora,explanatoryandexculpatory。DarleyhadbeenresistingtheordersofanofficerinhisMajesty\'sservice。Whatwouldbecomeofduesubordinationandloyalty,andtheinterestsoftheservice,andthechancesofbeatingthoseconfoundedFrench,ifsuchconductasDarley\'swastobeencouraged?(PoorDarley!hewaspastallevileffectsofhumanencouragementnow!)Sothevicarmumbledhastilyoverasermononthetext,\'Inthemidstoflifeweareindeath;\'whichmighthavedoneaswellforababycutoffinaconvulsion—fitasforthestrongmanshotdownwithallhiseagerbloodhotwithinhim,bymenashot—bloodedashimself。Butoncewhentheolddoctor\'seyecaughttheup—turned,straininggazeofthefatherDarley,seekingwithallhissoultofindagrainofholycomfortinthechaffofwords,hisconsciencesmotehim。Hadhenothingtosaythatshouldcalmangerandrevengewithspiritualpower?nobreathofthecomfortertosootherepiningintoresignation?ButagainthediscordbetweenthelawsofmanandthelawsofChriststoodbeforehim;andhegaveuptheattempttodomorethanhewasdoing,asbeyondhispower。Thoughthehearerswentawayasfullofangerastheyhadenteredthechurch,andsomewithadullfeelingofdisappointmentastowhattheyhadgotthere,yetnoonefeltanythingbutkindlytowardstheoldvicar。Hissimple,happylifeledamongstthemforfortyyears,andopentoallmeninitsdailycourse;hissweet—tempered,cordialways;hispracticalkindness,madehimbelovedbyall;andneitherhenortheythoughtmuchorcaredmuchforadmirationofhistalents。Respectforhisofficewasalltherespecthethoughtof;andthatwasconcededtohimfromoldtraditionalandhereditaryassociation。Inlookingbacktothelastcentury,itappearscurioustoseehowlittleourancestorshadthepowerofputtingtwothingstogether,andperceivingeitherthediscordorharmonythusproduced。Isitbecausewearefartherofffromthosetimes,andhave,consequently,agreaterrangeofvision?Willourdescendantshaveawonderaboutus,suchaswehaveabouttheinconsistencyofourforefathers,orasurpriseatourblindnessthatwedonotperceivethatholdingsuchandsuchopinions,ourcourseofactionmustbesoandso,orthatthelogicalconsequenceofparticularopinionsmustbeconvictionswhichatpresentweholdinabhorrence?Itseemspuzzlingtolookbackonmensuchasourvicar,whoalmostheldthedoctrinethattheKingcoulddonowrong,yetwereeverreadytotalkofthegloriousRevolution,andtoabusetheStuartsforhavingentertainedthesamedoctrine,andtriedtoputitinpractice。Butsuchdiscrepanciesranthroughgoodmen\'slivesinthosedays。Itiswellforusthatweliveatthepresenttime,whenevery—bodyislogicalandconsistent。ThislittlediscussionmustbetakeninplaceofDrWilson\'ssermon,ofwhichnoonecouldremembermorethanthetexthalfanhourafteritwasdelivered。Eventhedoctorhimselfhadtherecollectionofthewordshehadutteredsweptoutofhismind,as,havingdoffedhisgownanddonnedhissurplice,hecameoutoftheduskofhisvestryandwenttothechurch—door,lookingintothebroadlightwhichcameupontheplainofthechurchyardonthecliffs;forthesunhadnotyetset,andthepalemoonwasslowlyrisingthroughthesilverymistthatobscuredthedistantmoors。Therewasathick,densecrowd,allstillandsilentlookingawayfromthechurchandthevicar,whoawaitedthebringingofthedead。Theywerewatchingtheslowblacklinewindingupthelongsteps,restingtheirheavyburdenhereandthere,standinginsilentgroupsateachlanding—place;nowl
