  TheQueen\'seyefoundtheEarlinnomoodtoaccepttheimpliedofferofconciliation。Hisownlookshadfollowed,withlateandruefulrepentance,thefadedformwhichHunsdonhadjustbornefromthepresence。Theynowreposedgloomilyontheground,butmore——soatleastitseemedtoElizabeth——withtheexpressionofonewhohasreceivedanunjustaffront,thanofhimwhoisconsciousofguilt。Sheturnedherfaceangrilyfromhim,andsaidtoVarney,\"Speak,SirRichard,andexplaintheseriddles——

  Varneyhadnoalternativesaveobedience。InafewminutesLeicesterwasmuffledinthemantle,pulledhisbonnetoverhisbrows,andfollowedVarneyalongthesecretpassageoftheCastlewhichcommunicatedwithHunsdon\'sapartments,inwhichtherewasscarceachanceofmeetinganyinquisitiveperson,andhardlylightenoughforanysuchtohavesatisfiedtheircuriosity。

  TheyemergedatadoorwhereLordHunsdonhad,withmilitaryprecaution,placedasentinel,oneofhisownnorthernretainersasitfortuned,whoreadilyadmittedSirRichardVarneyandhisattendant,sayingonly,inhisnortherndialect,\"Iwould,man,thoucouldstmakethemadladybestillyonder;forhermoansdosaedirlthroughmyheadthatIwouldratherkeepwatchonasnowdrift,inthewastesofCatlowdie。\"
