  Yes,hewasawidower,andhemightdoashepleased。Thetyrantwasgone,andhewasfree。Thetyrantwasgone,andthetyrannyhaddoubtlessbeenveryoppressive。Whohadsufferedashehaddone?Butinthusbeingleftwithouthistyranthewaswretchedlydesolate。Mightitnotbethatthetyrannyhadbeengoodforhim?——thattheLordhadknownbestwhatwifewasfitforhim?Thenhethoughtofastorywhichhehadread——andhadwellmarkedashewasreading——ofsomemanwhohadbeenterriblyafflictedbyhiswife,whosewifehadstarvedhimandbeatenhimandreviledhim;andyetthismanhadbeenabletothankGodforhavingmortifiedhimintheflesh。Mightitnotbethatthemortificationwhichhehimselfhaddoubtlesssufferedinhisfleshhadbeenintendedforhiswelfare,andhadbeenverygoodforhim?Butifthiswereso,itmightbethatthemortificationwasnowremovedbecausetheLordknewthathisservanthadbeensufficientlymortified。Hehadnotbeenstarvedorbeaten,butthemortificationhadbeencertainlysevere。Thentherecamethesewords——intohismind,notintohismouth——’TheLordsentthethorn,andtheLordhastakenitaway。BlessedbetheLord。’Afterthathewasveryangrywithhimself,andtriedtopraythathemightbeforgiven。Whilehewassostrivingtherecamealowknockatthedoor,andMrsDraperagainenteredtheroom。
