IhavealreadynoticedtheimportanceoftheQuakershareinthevariousphilanthropicmovementsofthetime。TheQuakersharedmanyoftheviewsuponpracticalquestionswhichwerefavouredbythefreethinker,Bothwerehostiletoslavery,infavourofspreadingeducation,opposedtoallreligioustestsandrestrictions,andadvocatesofreforminprisons,andintheharshcriminallaw。ThefundamentaldifferencesoftheologicalbeliefwerenotsoproductiveofdiscordindealingwiththeQuakersaswithothersects;foritwastheveryessenceoftheoldQuakerspirittolookrathertothespiritthantotheletter,Allen,therefore,wasonlyactinginthespiritofhissocietywhenhecouldbeonequallygoodtermswiththeEmperorAlexanderorthedukeofKent,and,ontheotherhand,withJamesMill,thedenouncerofkingsandautocrats。HecouldjoinhandswithMillinassailingslavery,insistinguponprisonreform,preachingtolerationandadvancingcivilisation,althoughheheartilydisapprovedofthedoctrineswithwhichMill’spracticalprincipleswereassociated。Mill,too,practisedeventoaquestionabledegreethemethodofreticence,andtookgoodcarenottooffendhiscoadjutor。
