  DEARSIR,——Ireceivedlastnightyourfavorofthe10th,withMr。Brown’sreceipt,andthankyouforthetroubleyouhavebeensokindastotakeinthisbusiness。

  Ournewsfromthewestwardisdisagreeable。ConstantmurderscommittingbytheIndians,andtheircombinationthreatenstobemoreandmoreextensive。Ihopeweshallgivethemathoroughdrubbingthissummer,andthenchangeourtomahawkintoagoldenchainoffriendship。Themosteconomicalaswellasmosthumaneconducttowardsthemistobribethemintopeace,andtoretaintheminpeacebyeternalbribes。Theexpeditionthisyearwouldhaveservedforpresentsonthemostliberalscaleforonehundredyears;norshallweotherwiseevergetridofanyarmy,orofourdebt。TheleastragofIndiandepredationwillbeanexcusetoraisetroopsforthosewholovetohavetroops,andforthosewhothinkthatapublicdebtisagoodthing。Adieu,mydearSir。Yoursaffectionately。
