WhilemanagingtheGas-works,oneofMr。Neilson’slaboursoflovewastheestablishmentanddirectionbyhimofaWorkmen’sInstitutionformutualimprovement。Havingbeenaworkmanhimself,andexperiencedthedisadvantagesofanimperfecteducationinearlylife,aswellasthebenefitsarisingfromimprovedcultureinlateryears,hedesiredtoimpartsomeoftheseadvantagestotheworkmeninhisemployment,whoconsistedchieflyofpersonsfromremotepartsoftheHighlandsorfromIreland。Mostofthemcouldnotevenread,andhisprincipaldifficultyconsistedinpersuadingthemthatitwasofanyusetolearn。ForsometimetheyresistedhispersuasionstoformaWorkmen’sInstitution,withaviewtotheestablishmentofalibrary,classes,andlectures,urgingasasufficientpleafornotjoiningit,thattheycouldnotread,andthatbookswouldbeofnousetothem。AtlastMr。Neilsonsucceeded,thoughwithconsiderabledifficulty,ininducingfourteenoftheworkmentoadopthisplan。
Eachmemberwastocontributeasmallsummonthly,tobelaidoutinbooks,theGasCompanyprovidingthememberswithacomfortableroominwhichtheymightmeettoreadandconverseintheeveningsinsteadofgoingtothealehouse。Thememberswereafterwardsallowedtotakethebookshometoread,andtheroomwasusedforthepurposeofconversationonthesubjectsofthebooksreadbythem,andoccasionallyforlecturesdeliveredbythemembersthemselvesongeography,arithmetic,chemistry,andmechanics。Theirnumbersincreasedsothattheroominwhichtheymetbecameinsufficientfortheiraccommodation,whentheGasCompanyprovidedthemwithanewandlargerplaceofmeeting,togetherwithalaboratoryandworkshop。
Intheformertheystudiedpracticalchemistry,andinthelattertheystudiedpracticalmechanics,makingforthemselvesanairpumpandanelectrifyingmachine,aswellaspreparingthevariousmodelsusedinthecourseofthelectures。Theeffectsontheworkmenwereeminentlybeneficial,andtheinstitutioncametobecitedasamongthemostvaluableofitskindinthekingdom。*
