  monkledthempasttheTurkishsentinels,totheplacewheretheSaviourwastakendownfromthecrossandanointed,andwherecandleswereburninginninegreatcandlesticks。Themonkshowedandexplainedeverything。Efímofferedacandlethere。ThenthemonkledEfímtotheright,upthestepstoGolgotha,totheplacewherethecrosshadstood。Efímprayedthere。Thentheyshowedhimthecleftwherethegroundhadbeenrentasundertoitsnethermostdepths;thentheplacewhereChrist’shandsandfeetwerenailedtothecross;thenAdam’stomb,wherethebloodofChristhaddrippedontoAdam’sbones。ThentheyshowedhimthestoneonwhichChristsatwhenthecrownofthornswasplacedonHishead;thentheposttowhichChristwasboundwhenHewasscourged。ThenEfímsawthestonewithtwoholesforChrist’sfeet。Theyweregoingtoshowhimsomethingelse,buttherewasastirinthecrowd,andthepeopleallhurriedtothechurchoftheLord’sSepulchreitself。TheLatinMasshadjustfinishedthere,andtheRussianMasswasbeginning。AndEfímwentwiththecrowdtothetombcutintherock。

  Hetriedtogetridofthepilgrim,againstwhomhewasstillsinninginhismind,butthepilgrimwouldnotleavehim,butwentwithhimtotheMassattheHolySepulchre。Theytriedtogettothefront,butweretoolate。Therewassuchacrowdthatitwasimpossibletomoveeitherbackwardsorforwards。Efímstoodlookinginfrontofhim,praying,andeverynowandthenfeelingforhispurse。Hewasintwominds:sometimeshethoughtthatthepilgrimwasdeceivinghim,andthenagainhethoughtthatifthepilgrimspokethetruthandhispursehadreallybeenstolen,thesamethingmighthappentohimself。
