  “Whereto,sir?“

  “RedLion,Farringdon,“saysTom,givinghostlerashilling。

  “Allright,sir——RedLion,Jem,“tothepostboy;andTomrattlesawaytowardshome。AtFarringdon,beingknowntotheinnkeeper,hegetsthatworthytopayfortheOxfordhorses,andforwardhiminanotherchaiseatonce;andsothegorgeousyounggentlemanarrivesatthepaternalmansion,andSquireBrownlooksratherblueathavingtopaytwopoundtenshillingsforthepostingexpensesfromOxford。Buttheboy’sintensejoyatgettinghome,andthewonderfulhealthheisin,andthegoodcharacterhebrings,andthebravestorieshetellsofRugby,itsdoingsanddelights,soonmollifytheSquire,andthreehappierpeopledidn’tsitdowntodinnerthatdayinEnglanditistheboy’sfirstdinneratsixo’clockathome——greatpromotionalreadythantheSquireandhiswifeandTomBrown,attheendofhisfirsthalf-yearatRugby。
