  AthroughtrainfromEasttoWestpresentssomepeculiarfeaturesaswellasthetraitscommontoallrailwaytravel;andourfriendsdecidedthatthiswasnotaverywell-dressedcompany,andwouldcontrastwiththepeopleonanexpress-trainbetweenBostonandNewYorktonobetteradvantagethanthesewouldshowbesidetheaveragepassengersbetweenLondonandParis。Anditseemstruethatonawestering’line,theblackingfadesgraduallyfromtheboots,thehatsoftensandsinks,thecoatlosesitsrigorofcut,andthewholepersonloungesintoincreasinginformalityofcostume。Ispeakoftheundressfulsexalone:woman,whereversheis,appearsinthelastattainableeffectsoffashion,whicharenowallbuttelegraphicanduniversal。Butmostofthepassengershereweremen,andtheymereplainlyofthefree-andeasyWestratherthanthedapperEast。Theyworefacesthoughtfulwiththeproblemofbuyingcheapandsellingdear,andtheycouldbeknownbytheirsilencefromtheloquacious,acquaintance-makingway-travellers。Inthese,themerecomingaboardseemedtobegetanaggressivelyconfidentialmood。

  Perhapstheyclutchedrecklesslyatanymeansofrelievingtheirennui;
