  Thegreat,blackbodyofhercarseemedtosailoutintonothingnesslikesomeweirdaerialmonster,theheadlightsstreaminguncannilythroughspace-thenblackness-andaterrificcrash。

  Andnowtheothercarhadcometoastopalmostoppositewhereshelay。Danglarandthetwochauffeurs,shoutingateachotherinwildexcitement,leapedoutandrushedtotheedgeoftheembankment。

  Andthensuddenlytheskygrewredasagreattongue-flameshotupfrombelow。Itoutlinedtheformsofthethreemenastheystoodthere,until,abruptly,asthoughwithoneaccord,theyrushedpell-melldowntheembankmenttowardtheburningwreckage。AndastheydisappearedfromsightRhodaGrayjumpedtoherfeet,sprangforDanglar’scar,flungherselfintothedriver’sseat,andthecarshotforwardagainalongtheroad。

  Ashout,awildchorusofyells,thereportsofafusilladeofshotsreachedher;shecaughtaglimpseofformsrunninginsanelyafterheralongtheedgeoftheembankment-thensilencesavefortheroarofthespeedingcar。
