met，andtheinformationIreceived，wereofnosmallinterest——atleasttomyself；andItrustthatthereaderwillderiveasmuchpleasurefromperusingmyobservationsasIhavehadincollectingandwritingthemdown。IdothinkthattheremarkablepersonswhosehistoryandcharactersIhaveendeavoured，howeverbriefly，tosketch，willbefoundtoaffordmanyvaluableandimportantlessonsofSelf-Help；andtoillustratehowthemoralandindustrialfoundationsofacountrymaybebuiltupandestablished。
