  Tributescametohiminmanyforms。InhisnativeStateitwasproposedtoformaMarkTwainAssociation,withheadquartersatHannibal,withtheimmediatepurposeofhavingaweeksetapartattheSt。LouisWorld’sFair,tobecalledtheMarkTwainweek,withaspecialMarkTwainday,onwhichanationalliteraryconventionwouldbeheld。Butwhenhisconsentwasasked,andhisco—operationinvited,hewrotecharacteristically:

  Itisindeedahighcomplimentwhichyouofferme,innaminganassociationaftermeandinproposingthesettingapartofaMarkTwaindayatthegreatSt。LouisFair,butsuchcomplimentsarenotproperfortheliving;theyareproperandsafeforthedeadonly。Ivaluetheimpulsewhichmovesyoutotendermethesehonors。Ivalueitashighlyasanyonecan,andamgratefulforit,butIshouldstandinasortofterrorofthehonorsthemselves。Solongasweremainalivewearenotsafefromdoingthingswhich,howeverrighteouslyandhonorablyintended,canwreckourreputeandextinguishourfriendships。
