  ThereisanoldstorythatonceonatimeacertainjovialKingofFrance,makingaprogressthroughhiskingdom,wasreceivedatthegatesofaprovincialtownbythemayor’sdeputy,whobeganhisspeechonthiswise:“MayitpleaseyourMajesty,therearejustthirteenreasonswhyHisHonourtheMayorcannotbepresenttowelcomeyouthismorning。Thefirstofthesereasonsisthatheisdead。”Onthisthekinggraciouslydeclaredthatthisfirstreasonwassufficient,andthathewouldnottroublethemayor’sdeputyforthetwelveothers。

  SowithMr。Southall’sargument:onesimpleresultofscientificresearchoutofmanyisallthatitisneedfultostate,andthisis,thatintheselateryearswehaveanewandconvincingevidenceoftheexistenceofprehistoricmaninEgyptinhisearliest,rudestbeginnings;theverysameevidencewhichwefindinallotherpartsoftheworldwhichhavebeencarefullyexamined。ThisevidenceconsistsofstoneimplementsandweaponswhichhavebeenfoundinEgyptinsuchforms,atsuchpoints,andinsuchpositionsthatwhenstudiedinconnectionwiththosefoundinallotherpartsoftheworld,fromNewJerseytoCalifornia,fromFrancetoIndia,andfromEnglandtotheAndamanIslands,theyforceuponustheconvictionthatcivilizationinEgypt,asinallotherpartsoftheworld,wasdevelopedbythesameslowprocessofevolutionfromtherudestbeginnings。
