  Intheconfusionattendingmyfall,Ididnotimmediatelyapprehendasomewhatstartlingcircumstance,whichyet,inafewsecondsafterward,andwhileIstilllayprostrate,arrestedmyattention。Itwasthismychinrestedupontheflooroftheprison,butmylipsandtheupperportionofmyhead,althoughseeminglyatalesselevationthanthechin,touchednothing。Atthesametimemyforeheadseemedbathedinaclammyvapor,andthepeculiarsmellofdecayedfungusarosetomynostrils。Iputforwardmyarm,andshudderedtofindthatIhadfallenattheverybrinkofacircularpit,whoseextent,ofcourse,Ihadnomeansofascertainingatthemoment。Gropingaboutthemasonryjustbelowthemargin,Isucceededindislodgingasmallfragment,andletitfallintotheabyss。FormanysecondsIhearkenedtoitsreverberationsasitdashedagainstthesidesofthechasminitsdescent;atlengththerewasasullenplungeintowater,succeededbyloudechoes。Atthesamemomenttherecameasoundresemblingthequickopening,andasrapidclosingofadooroverhead,whileafaintgleamoflightflashedsuddenlythroughthegloom,andassuddenlyfadedaway。
