Chile,boundedbytheAndesandthePacific,wasseenasinamap。Thepleasurefromthescenery,initselfbeautiful,washeightenedbythemanyreflectionswhicharosefromthemereviewoftheCampanarangewithitslesserparallelones,andofthebroadvalleyofQuillotadirectlyintersectingthem。Whocanavoidwonderingattheforcewhichhasupheavedthesemountains,andevenmoresoatthecountlessageswhichitmusthaverequiredtohavebrokenthrough,removed,andlevelledwholemassesofthem?ItiswellinthiscasetocalltomindthevastshingleandsedimentarybedsofPatagonia,which,ifheapedontheCordillera,wouldincreaseitsheightbysomanythousandfeet。Wheninthatcountry,Iwonderedhowanymountain-chaincouldhavesuppliedsuchmasses,andnothavebeenutterlyobliterated。
Wemustnotnowreversethewonder,anddoubtwhetherall-powerfultimecangrinddownmountains——eventhegiganticCordillera——into-gravelandmud。
