Theammunitionbreadisdeliveredtothesoldierseveryfourthday，inloaves，eachloafbeingequaltotworations；anditisarulegenerallyestablishedinthemesses，foreachsoldiertofurnishoneloaffortheuseofthemesseverytwelfthday，sothathehasfive-sixthsofhisallowanceofbread，whichremainsathisdisposal。
TheforegoingaccountofthemannerinwhichtheBavariansoldiersarefed，will，Ithink，showmostclearlythegreatimportanceofmakingsoldierslivetogetherinmesses——ItmaylikewisefurnishsomeusefulhintstothosewhomaybeengagedinfeedingthePoor，orinprovidingFoodforships’scompanies，orotherbodiesofmenwhoarefedincommon。
Withregardtotheexpenseoffuelintheseexperiments，asthevictualswerecookedinearthenpots，overanopenfire，theconsumptionoffire-woodwasverygreat。
