  Itcertainlyaugmentsthedemandforthelabourofchildrenandincreasestherateoftheirwages。’Ontheotherhand,thissamedispenserofconsolationdefendsthelownessofthechildren’swagesonthegroundthatitpreventsparentsfromsendingtheirchildrenattooearlyanageintothefactory。Thewholeofhisbookisavindicationofaworking—dayofunrestrictedlength;thatParliamentshouldforbidchildrenof13yearstobeexhaustedbyworking12hoursaday,remindshisliberalsoulofthedarkestdaysofthemiddleages。ThisdoesnotpreventhimfromcallinguponthefactoryoperativestothankProvidence,whobymeansofmachineryhasgiventhemtheleisuretothinkoftheir\"immortalinterests。\"[131]

  SECTION6。THETHEORYOFCOMPENSATIONASREGARDSTHEWORKPEOPLEDISPLACEDBYMACHINERY

  JamesMill,MacCulloch,Torrens,Senior,JohnStuartMill,andawholeseriesbesides,ofbourgeoispoliticaleconomists,insistthatallmachinerythatdisplacesworkmen,simultaneouslyandnecessarilysetsfreeanamountofcapitaladequatetoemploythesameidenticalworkmen。[132]
