  InaformerarticleithasbeenseenhowMr。Thornton,inthefirstchapterofhisFirstBook,disproved,ongroundsofpurepoliticaleconomy,thesupposednaturallawbywhich,intheopinionofmany,thepriceoflabourisasstrictlydeterminedasthemotionoftheearth,anddeterminedinamannerunalterablebythewilloreffortofeitherpartytothetransaction。

  Butwhateverintheaffairsofmankindisnotperemptorilydecidedforthembynaturallaws,fallsunderthejurisdictionofthemorallaw。Sincethereisacertainrange,widerthanhasbeengenerallybelieved,withinwhichthepriceoflabourisdecidedbyaconflictofwillsbetweenemployersandlabourers,itisnecessary,asineveryothercaseofhumanvoluntaryaction,toascertainthemoralprinciplesbywhichthisconflictoughttoberegulated。Thetermsofthebargainnotbeingamatterofnecessity,but,withincertainlimits,ofchoice,ithastobeconsideredhowfareithersidecanrightfullypressitsclaims,andtakeadvantageofitsopportunities。Or,toexpressthesameideasinotherphraseology,ithastobedecidedwhetherthereareanyrights,oflabourontheonehand,orofcapitalontheother,whichwouldbeviolatediftheoppositepartypusheditspretensionstotheextremelimitsofeconomicpossibility。
