  Itwasadreadfultrip。ButOliverdidnotcomplain。Thehorsesdraggedthewagontwomilesfromtownandthengaveout。Thenwethreepushedthewagonsevenmiles,andOlivermovedaheadandpulledthehorsesafterhimbythebits。Wecomplained,butOliverdidnot。Thegroundwasfrozen,anditfrozeourbackswhileweslept;thewindsweptacrossourfacesandfrozeournoses。Oliverdidnotcomplain。Fivedaysofpushingthewagonbydayandfreezingbynightbroughtustothebadpartofthejourney——theFortyMileDesert,ortheGreatAmericanDesert,ifyouplease。Still,thismildest—manneredmanthateverwas,hadnotcomplained。Westartedacrossateightinthemorning,pushingthroughsandthathadnobottom;

  toilingalldaylongbythewrecksofathousandwagons,theskeletonsoftenthousandoxen;bywagon—tiresenoughtohooptheWashingtonMonumenttothetop,andox—chainsenoughtogirdleLongIsland;byhumangraves;

  withourthroatsparchedalways,withthirst;lipsbleedingfromthealkalidust;hungry,perspiring,andvery,veryweary——sowearythatwhenwedroppedinthesandeveryfiftyyardstorestthehorses,wecouldhardlykeepfromgoingtosleep——nocomplaintsfromOliver:nonethenextmorningatthreeo\'clock,whenwegotacross,tiredtodeath。
