Letusconsiderwhatwecallviciousluxury.Nogratification，howeversensual，canofitselfbeesteemedvicious.Agratificationisonlyvicious，whenitengrossesallaman\'sexpence，andleavesnoabilityforsuchactsofdutyandgenerosityasarerequiredbyhissituationandfortune.Suppose，thathecorrectthevice，andemploypartofhisexpenceintheeducationofhischildren，inthesupportofhisfriends，andinrelievingthepoor;wouldanyprejudiceresulttosociety？Onthecontrary，thesameconsumptionwouldarise;andthatlabour，which，atpresent，isemployedonlyinproducingaslendergratificationtooneman，wouldrelievethenecessitous，andbestowsatisfactiononhundreds.ThesamecareandtoilthatraiseadishofpeasatCHRISTMAS，wouldgivebreadtoawholefamilyduringsixmonths.Tosay，that，withoutaviciousluxury，thelabourwouldnothavebeenemployedatall，isonlytosay，thatthereissomeotherdefectinhumannature，suchasindolence，selfishness，inattentiontoothers，forwhichluxury，insomemeasure，providesaremedy;asonepoisonmaybeanantidotetoanother.Butvirtue，likewholesomefood，isbetterthanpoisons，howevercorrected.
